About Pilot Jobs

Pilot covers several distinct jobs that share one idea: local knowledge, proven and licensed for a specific stretch of water.

State pilots board ships from a launch, often at night in weather, and take the conn through a channel they know at a level no visiting Master could. The associations that hold these franchises are small, closed and selective. Entry is usually an apprenticeship or deputy program, requires a Master license and serious sea time, and takes years before full turns.

Federal first class pilotage is different. It is an endorsement a licensed officer adds to an existing credential, authorizing pilotage on named routes for U.S.-flagged vessels on coastwise voyages. It is earned through documented round trips and detailed chart examination, and it makes an officer considerably more valuable to a coastwise or ferry operator.

Towing has its own structure, where mate-grade officers hold Mate (Pilot) of Towing Vessels and qualify for routes by demonstrated familiarity.

Postings appear on the Great Lakes, Western Rivers, Gulf Coast, Puget Sound, and the major ship channels. Read each one carefully, because the word pilot on a job board can mean any of these three things.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a state pilot and a federal pilot?
State pilots are licensed by a state board and handle foreign-flag and registered vessels in compulsory pilotage waters, usually through a pilot association. A federal first class pilotage endorsement lets a licensed officer pilot a U.S.-flagged coastwise vessel on specified routes without taking a pilot.
How do you become a state pilot?
Through a state pilot association apprenticeship or deputy program. Entry is competitive and limited, typically requiring a Master license, significant sea time, and selection into a multi-year training program on specific waters.
What is a pilotage endorsement on a towing license?
On towing vessels the mate grade is formally Mate (Pilot) of Towing Vessels. The pilotage element refers to the routes you are authorized on, demonstrated by chart sketches and route familiarity.
Do pilots need local knowledge for each route?
Yes. Pilotage is route-specific. You qualify for named waters by making documented round trips and demonstrating knowledge of that particular channel, its currents, depths and aids.
