About Master Jobs
Master is the top of the deck license structure, and the responsibility is not distributed. The Master answers to the company, the Coast Guard, the class society, the charterer and the flag state, and is the final authority on the safety of the vessel regardless of what anyone ashore would prefer.
The work varies enormously by tonnage. On a small passenger or utility vessel the Master is also standing watch, handling lines and running the paperwork alone. On a deep-sea ship the job is more managerial: voyage planning, stability and cargo decisions, port state and vetting inspections, ISM documentation, crew discipline and payroll, and the piloted transits where the Master is on the bridge whatever the hour.
Credentials are tiered by tonnage and route, and each step demands documented sea time in the grade below. Anything on an international voyage adds STCW endorsements.
U.S. berths sit across deep-sea cargo and tanker fleets, MSC and government-operated vessels, offshore supply and construction, research ships, ferries and passenger operations, and the larger coastwise fleets.
Compensation is usually a salary or a high day rate on even-time rotation. The seat is scarce and the hiring is conservative; companies promote from within far more often than they hire a stranger into command.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What does a Master license authorize?
- Command of a vessel within the tonnage and route limits printed on the credential, for example Master 100 GRT Near Coastal, Master 1600 GRT Oceans, or Master Unlimited. Each tier has its own sea time, course and exam requirements.
- How long does it take to become a Master?
- Years. Academy graduates typically start as third mates and work up through second and chief mate before sitting for Master, with defined sea time at each level. The hawsepipe route from AB takes longer still.
- Is Master the same as Captain?
- Master is the credential. Captain is the job title and the position aboard. A person can hold a Master license and be sailing as chief mate.
- What else does a Master need besides the license?
- A TWIC, a medical certificate, STCW endorsements for vessels on international routes, and typically radar observer, GMDSS or similar depending on the vessel. Companies add their own training on top.
