About First Assistant Engineer Jobs
First Assistant is the working supervisor of the engine department. The Chief sets the program and owns the accountability; the first assistant makes it happen on the deck plates, every day, with whatever people and spares are actually aboard.
That means assigning the maintenance, deciding what gets deferred when a job runs long, leading the overhauls, keeping the work and oil records straight, staging parts for shipyard periods, and training the thirds and seconds who will eventually be doing your job. On many vessels the first also holds the main propulsion machinery directly.
The license follows documented service as a second assistant plus the required courses and exams, with STCW endorsements on international routes.
Positions exist on deep-sea cargo and tanker fleets, MSC and other government-operated vessels, research and survey ships, offshore construction and supply vessels, and larger passenger operations. Union berths ship from the engineer officer halls.
There are rarely many of these posted at once, because operators promote seconds into them and fill the gap at the bottom instead. When one is open, it is usually because a chief's seat opened somewhere above it, and that is worth knowing when you apply.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What does a First Assistant Engineer do?
- Runs the engine room day to day. The first assistant assigns and supervises the maintenance work, manages the other assistants and QMEDs, and is the Chief Engineer's direct deputy.
- What license is required?
- A USCG First Assistant Engineer endorsement for the applicable horsepower and route, earned through documented service as a second assistant, with STCW operational or management-level endorsements as the route requires.
- Is First Assistant the step before Chief Engineer?
- Yes. Documented service as first assistant is what qualifies an engineer to sit for Chief, and companies use the grade to evaluate who is ready for it.
- What is the workload like?
- Heavy, especially in port and during maintenance periods. The first assistant is usually the hardest-working person in the department and is the one who absorbs schedule pressure from both ends.
