About Chief Engineer Jobs
Chief Engineer is an accountability job wearing coveralls. The plant, the department, the budget, the survey status and the regulatory paperwork all terminate with you, and so does the phone call when something fails at three in the morning off a coast with no tug within reach.
The daily work is planning more than turning wrenches, though most chiefs still do both. Maintenance schedules and class survey windows, spares inventory and long-lead ordering, fuel and lube oil quality and consumption, emissions and oil record book compliance, shipyard scope and drydock specifications, and managing assistants and QMEDs who each want a different priority that morning.
The license comes after documented service as a first assistant, with the required courses and exams and management-level STCW endorsements for international routes.
Positions sit on deep-sea cargo and tanker fleets, MSC and government-operated vessels, research and survey ships, offshore supply and construction vessels, ferries and large passenger operations, and the bigger towing units.
Compensation is at or near the top of the vessel pay scale, often matching or exceeding the Master on technically demanding vessels. The seat is hard to fill, and companies know what it costs them when it is empty.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What does a Chief Engineer do?
- Runs the engine department. That covers the maintenance program, spares and budget, fuel and lube oil management, regulatory and class survey compliance, and responsibility for the safe operation of the plant.
- What license is required?
- A USCG Chief Engineer endorsement for the applicable horsepower and route, with STCW management-level endorsements for vessels on international voyages. It is earned through documented service as a first assistant.
- Does the Chief Engineer stand a watch?
- Usually not a rotating watch. Chiefs typically work days and are on call around the clock, which in practice means being woken for anything serious.
- How long does it take to reach Chief Engineer?
- Years of documented sea time through the assistant engineer grades, plus courses and exams at each step. Academy and hawsepipe routes both lead here; neither is quick.
