Position Summary:
The Deckhand plays a vital role in ensuring safe towing, docking, and vessel maintenance while upholding Carver’s high standards of safety and professionalism. This is a hands-on role requiring physical endurance, attention to detail, and the ability to work as part of a tight-knit crew in a fast-paced maritime environment.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Assist with line handling for towing, docking, and undocking operations.
- Secure barges, towlines, and other gear in a safe and efficient manner.
- Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of the tug and barge deck, engine room, and living quarters.
- Stand watch and assist with navigation and lookout duties when needed.
- Handle and stow equipment such as fenders, cables, and hawsers.
- Participate in safety drills and comply with all safety protocols.
- Assist the Captain, Mate, and Engineer as directed to support vessel operations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- 1 year of experience working aboard tugboats or commercial marine vessels preferred.
- Current TWIC card and Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC).
- Strong work ethic and ability to follow instructions in high-pressure environments.
- Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions and aboard moving vessels.
- Willingness to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Preferred Experience:
- Familiarity with New York Harbor operations and towing procedures.
- Experience with barge tie-ups, rigging, and general vessel maintenance.
- Able Bodied Seaman License
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work extended shifts aboard vessels in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to lift and move materials up to 75 pounds.
- Frequent climbing, balancing, and movement across vessel decks and ladders.
- Ability to respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations.
Work Environment:
- Work is performed primarily aboard tugboats in marine environments.
- Exposure to outdoor elements, including changing weather conditions, noise, and vessel motion.
- Schedule may include rotational shifts, extended hours, and time away from home depending on operations.
- Strict adherence to safety regulations and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required.
