Job Description

Senior / Principal Marine Surveyor - Hull & Machinery, Cargo, Claims.

BRAND NEW

ROLE FOR OUR CLIENT

Flexible West Coast Location | Los Angeles | Long Beach | San Diego | Oakland | Bay Area (On-site)

The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Senior / Principal Marine Surveyor to join an established marine surveying and consultancy business with strong capabilities across Hull & Machinery (H&M), cargo claims, loss prevention and marine casualty investigations.

Working with leading insurers, underwriters, P&I clubs, EPC contractors, freight forwarders, cargo owners and vessel operators, the company provides specialist technical expertise across a broad range of marine and cargo-related assignments throughout the United States.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced marine surveyor based on the US West Coast to take ownership of a varied workload, apply their technical expertise and established industry relationships, and contribute to the continued development of the business within a supportive, technically focused environment.

Key Responsibilities

The opportunity is open to candidates from a strong marine surveying background, whether they specialise in casualty investigations and claims or are looking to transition into the claims sector from a more general damage surveying background.

Experience across two or three of the areas below would provide a strong foundation for success in this role. The company recognises that individual surveyors bring different strengths and is interested in candidates who can contribute across several areas while continuing to develop their expertise.

  • Hull & Machinery Surveys: Conduct vessel damage surveys, condition and valuation surveys, and repair inspections, providing technical assessments of damage, repair requirements and associated costs.
  • P&I Surveys & Casualty Investigations: Undertake P&I-related surveys, attend marine casualties and support investigations into vessel incidents and operational damage.
  • Dry Bulk Surveys: Carry out draft surveys, cargo hold inspections, and supervise loading and discharge operations.
  • Cargo Claims & Investigations: Investigate cargo damage, shortages and contamination, producing clear and commercially relevant technical findings.
  • Heavy Lift & Project Cargo: Support specialist assignments involving heavy-lift operations and complex project cargo movements.
  • Technical Reporting: Prepare accurate, timely and well-structured survey reports in accordance with company standards.
  • Client Relationships: Develop and maintain relationships with insurers, P&I clubs, shipping companies, terminals, shipyards and other local industry contacts.
  • Regional & National Support: Work closely with the Regional Manager and wider national team, supporting assignments across the West Coast and travelling further afield when required.

Key Skills & Experience

We are particularly interested in candidates who can demonstrate:

  • Strong Hull & Machinery (H&M) surveying experience, including hands-on vessel damage assessments and repair surveys.
  • Experience in marine damage surveying, with exposure to cargo claims, casualty investigations or related technical assessments.
  • Excellent technical report-writing skills and the ability to communicate findings clearly and professionally to clients.
  • The ability to manage survey assignments independently while working effectively with colleagues and clients.

Desirable Experience

  • Existing knowledge of the US West Coast maritime market, ideally including ports such as Los Angeles, Long Beach, San Diego, Oakland, Richmond, Stockton and San Francisco.
  • Experience conducting marine surveys for insurers, underwriters, P&I clubs or vessel operators.
  • Experience across dry bulk, general cargo, cargo damage investigations, or heavy-lift and project cargo assignments.
  • A current Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC), or the ability to obtain one.
  • A flexible approach to travel and the willingness to support assignments outside the immediate region when required.

Why Consider This Opportunity?

In today's fast moving maritime environment, vessel operations, marine construction and complex project cargo movements increasingly require effective risk management, technical assessment and independent surveying expertise.

This position offers the opportunity to work across a diverse range of marine surveying and claims assignments, from H&M expertise, cargo, P&I and casualty investigation work.

Whether you are an established claims surveyor looking to broaden your technical exposure or an experienced marine damage surveyor seeking to develop your career within the claims and casualty investigation sector, this role offers the opportunity to strengthen client relationships, expand your technical capabilities and contribute to the continued development of a regional operation.
