Job Description
Position Summary
SR Trident, Inc. is seeking a Project Engineer to support our Project Managers throughout the complete construction lifecycle, from estimating and preconstruction through field execution and project closeout.
This is an early-career position intended for someone who wants to build a long-term career in construction project management. The successful candidate will work directly with experienced Project Managers, Superintendents, field personnel, subcontractors, vendors, engineers, and clients while gaining hands-on experience in both the field and office sides of construction.
This is not a desk-only engineering position. The Project Engineer will regularly work on active construction sites and will be expected to understand how the work is actually performed in the field.
Our objective is to develop the successful candidate into a Project Manager capable of independently estimating, planning, executing, and financially managing construction projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Estimating & Preconstruction
- Review construction drawings, specifications, bid documents, and scopes of work.
- Perform quantity takeoffs.
- Assist with estimating labor, materials, equipment, and subcontracted work.
- Solicit and evaluate vendor and subcontractor quotations.
- Assist with preparation of proposals, clarifications, exclusions, and bid documentation.
- Participate in pre-bid meetings and project site visits.
- Assist with developing preliminary schedules, manpower requirements, equipment needs, and construction plans.
- Identify potential scope gaps, constructability concerns, and project risks.
- Assist with project turnover from estimating into operations.
- Project Execution
- Assist Project Managers with day-to-day management of active construction projects.
- Maintain familiarity with project contracts, drawings, specifications, schedules, budgets, and scope requirements.
- Coordinate with Superintendents and field personnel regarding upcoming work, materials, equipment, subcontractors, and project requirements.
- Track project quantities, production, manpower, equipment utilization, and progress.
- Prepare and maintain RFIs, submittals, purchase orders, change orders, and other project documentation.
- Assist with material procurement and delivery coordination.
- Participate in project meetings and follow through on assigned action items.
- Assist with maintaining project schedules and identifying potential delays or conflicts.
- Help resolve field issues before they negatively impact production, cost, or schedule.
- Field Engineering & Coordination
- Regularly visit and work from active project sites.
- Verify field conditions against drawings and project requirements.
- Assist with field measurements, layout, quantity verification, and documentation of completed work.
- Document changed conditions, additional work, delays, and other events that could affect project cost or schedule.
- Maintain organized project photographs and field documentation.
- Coordinate with field supervision, engineering, inspectors, subcontractors, vendors, and client representatives.
- Develop an understanding of construction means and methods and how project decisions affect field production.
- Project Controls & Cost Management
- Assist with maintaining project budgets and cost reports.
- Track purchase orders, subcontract commitments, material costs, equipment costs, and pending changes.
- Compare actual production and costs against the original estimate and project budget.
- Assist Project Managers with project forecasting and identification of potential cost issues.
- Assist with monthly billing, quantity verification, and supporting documentation.
- Maintain RFI, submittal, change order, procurement, and other project logs.
- Assist with developing pricing and supporting documentation for additional work and change-order requests.
- Project Closeout
- Assist with punch-list completion and final inspections.
- Coordinate warranties, certifications, test reports, as-built information, and other required closeout documents.
- Assist with final quantity reconciliation and project cost review.
- Ensure project records and documentation are complete before final closeout.
- Participate in project lessons-learned reviews.
Qualifications
- Pursuing or having obtained a bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant construction experience.
- 1-2 years of construction-related experience preferred.
- Construction internships, co-op programs, field experience, estimating experience, or hands-on construction employment will be considered relevant experience.
- Basic understanding of construction means and methods.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
- Familiarity with quantity takeoffs, estimating, RFIs, submittals, schedules, purchase orders, and change orders is preferred.
- Strong mathematical and problem-solving abilities.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with both field craft personnel and management.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments and follow tasks through completion.
- Willingness to work in both office and active construction environments.
- Willingness to travel to project sites and work outside normal business hours when project requirements dictate.
- Valid driver's license.

Prior marine construction experience is not required. SR Trident is willing to teach the marine and industrial aspects of the business to someone who has a solid construction foundation and demonstrates the ability and desire to learn.

This position is specifically intended to provide a career path into Project Management.
The Project Engineer will progressively gain experience in:
Estimating → Preconstruction → Procurement → Field Operations → Scheduling → Cost Control → Change Management → Client Coordination → Project Closeout
As the employee develops, they will be given increasing responsibility for individual scopes of work and smaller projects under the supervision of experienced Project Managers.
The long-term objective is for the Project Engineer to progress into a Project Manager responsible for projects from initial estimate through completion and financial closeout.
Work Environment
This position involves a combination of office and field work. Field assignments may include industrial facilities, marine and waterfront projects, heavy civil construction sites, and other active construction environments.
Candidates must be comfortable wearing required PPE and working around heavy equipment, cranes, marine equipment, vessels, and ongoing construction operations.

Pay: $80,000.00 - $90,000.00 per year
