Port Engineer - Tugs

Overview

Join our dynamic team as a Port Engineer specializing in Tugs, where you will play a vital role in ensuring the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of maritime tugboats. This position offers an exciting opportunity to lead technical projects, oversee vessel maintenance, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to optimize maritime operations. As a key player in our maritime engineering division, you will utilize your expertise in shipbuilding, structural design, and project management to support our fleet’s performance and safety standards.

Responsibilities

• Plan, coordinate, and supervise all maintenance and repair activities for assigned vessels.
• Ensure all vessels remain in full compliance with USCG, ABS, Subchapter M, and internal SMS requirements.
• Develop, implement, and manage preventive maintenance schedules and long-term equipment planning.
• Coordinate drydocking’s, shipyard work, and major mechanical projects with vendors and internal teams for all regulatory inspections (USCG, OVID/SIRE, ABS, etc.)
• Serve as technical advisor to vessel captains and crew regarding mechanical, electrical, and structural issues.
• Maintain detailed service records, certificates, and regulatory documentation for assigned vessels.
• Oversee budgets, approve repair estimates, and manage cost controls for maintenance-related expenses.
• Source and procure parts, supplies, and services in coordination with the Purchasing Department.
• Respond to emergency repairs and after-hours mechanical issues as needed.
• Lead and mentor mechanics and apprentices assigned to repair and maintenance tasks.
• Conducting and documenting vessel technical visits.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required; technical or marine engineering certification preferred.
• 7+ years of maritime engineering experience, with at least 3 years managing multiple vessels or equivalency.
• Strong knowledge of tugboat systems including diesel engines, propulsion, hydraulics, and electrical systems.
• Experience with Subchapter M, USCG inspections, ABS class requirements, and SMS compliance.
• Excellent planning, leadership, and communication skills.
• Proficiency in using maintenance tracking software.
• TWIC card required; valid driver’s license and ability to travel to vessel locations as needed.
