Job Title: Port Engineer
Location: LA / San Pedro / Long Beach, CA
Industry: Maritime Transportation - Tug and Barge
We are seeking an experienced Port Engineer to oversee vessel maintenance, repair operations, and regulatory compliance for a leading, nationwide marine transportation provider. This is a great opportunity to get onboard with a well-established and reputable towing company with a reputation for treating its people well and operating a fleet of well maintained vessels.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee vessel availability by managing routine repairs, troubleshooting complex systems, and minimizing out-of-service time.
- Plan and execute major shipyard overhauls and maintenance projects while controlling project costs and operating budgets.
- Ensure full regulatory compliance across all assigned vessels (USCG, ABS, and regional environmental standards).
- Supervise contractors and maintenance teams to maintain safety standards and asset value.
Qualifications
- Education/Experience: B.S. in Marine Engineering, Maritime Academy graduate, or 10+ years of relevant industry experience.
- Background: Prior experience with towing vessels and/or tank vessels is strongly preferred. This is a mid-to-senior level role.
- Certifications: Active TWIC card required. Seagoing experience is a plus.
- Technical Skills: Strong background in mechanical, electrical, and fluid vessel systems, as well as CMMS/ERP tools.
- Travel & Work Requirements: Ability to board vessels, handle occasional nights/weekends for ongoing projects, and travel ~10% (primarily within California).
