Mate / Deckhand
JAX Yacht Charter
Job Description
Position: Experienced Deckhand / Mate
Schedule: Part-Time / Event & Charter Based, with potential for additional hours
About the Position
Our company is seeking an experienced, dependable Deckhand / Mate to join the crew aboard a large 125' passenger yacht operating private charters, corporate events, weddings, and ticketed cruises in Jacksonville.
This is not an entry-level deckhand position. We are looking for someone who already understands vessel operations and is confident handling lines during docking, departure, arrival, and maneuvering operations.
The ideal candidate is safety-conscious, physically capable, professional around guests, and able to anticipate what needs to be done without constant direction.
Responsibilities
- Safely and confidently handle dock lines, spring lines, breast lines, and fenders
- Assist Captain with docking, undocking, departures, arrivals, and vessel maneuvering
- Properly secure the vessel using appropriate knots and line-handling techniques
- Maintain awareness of line tension and changing conditions during docking operations
- Assist with deck operations before, during, and after cruises
- Perform pre-departure and post-cruise deck checks
- Maintain clean, organized, and guest-ready exterior deck areas
- Assist with cleaning, washdowns, maintenance, and general vessel upkeep
- Monitor guest safety while underway and assist with boarding and disembarking
- Assist Captain and crew during emergency or safety procedures
- Communicate clearly with the Captain and other crew members
- Maintain a professional appearance and attitude around charter guests
Required Experience & Qualifications
- Previous professional deckhand, mate, commercial vessel, tour boat, yacht, ferry, or similar marine experience required
- Strong line-handling experience is essential
- Must know basic maritime knots and proper vessel-securing procedures
- Must be comfortable working around docks, pilings, cleats, moving vessels, and changing tides/current
- Must understand and immediately follow Captain's commands during docking and vessel operations
- Physically capable of lifting, pulling, carrying, bending, climbing stairs/ladders, and working on deck
- Reliable transportation and dependable attendance
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and event-based schedules as needed
- Professional demeanor and ability to work around guests in a hospitality environment
- Must be safety-minded, alert, and able to remain calm under pressure
Preferred Qualifications
- Documented maritime experience
- CPR / First Aid certification preferred, but not required
- Experience aboard passenger vessels or larger yachts
- Knowledge of marine systems
- Hospitality or charter-yacht experience
- Must know lines
What We're Looking For
We want a crew member who knows boats and knows lines, someone who can step aboard, understand the Captain's direction, see what needs to happen during docking operations, and execute safely and efficiently.
Our vessel operates in a guest-facing environment, so professionalism is equally important. Our deck crew represents the vessel and Parent Company from the moment guests arrive at the dock until the vessel is secured after the cruise.
Experienced maritime candidates only, please.
To apply through Indeed, please submit your CV resume and a brief description of your boating/maritime experience, including the types and approximate sizes of vessels you have worked aboard.
Pay: $25.00 - $30.10 per hour
Work Location: In person
