Part-Time Maritime Surveyor (Per Assignment)

Pacific Northwest (Seattle, Tacoma, Portland & Surrounding Areas)

Assignments are primarily located in Seattle, Tacoma, Portland, and surrounding Pacific Northwest ports, including Everett, Longview, Kalama, Anacortes, Bellingham, Port Angeles, Vancouver (WA), Olympia, Grays Harbor, and Astoria. Occasional travel to additional regional ports may be required.

Compensation: Competitive per-assignment pay (commensurate with experience) plus reimbursement for approved travel expenses.

About the Opportunity

A well-established international marine surveying and consulting company is seeking an experienced Part-Time Maritime Surveyor to join our team in the Pacific Northwest. This position is ideal for a licensed mariner, former ship's officer, or experienced marine surveyor looking for flexible, project-based work.

Assignments are performed on an as-needed basis and include attendance aboard commercial vessels, terminals, and shipyards throughout the region.

What You'll Do

• Attend commercial vessels on behalf of clients.
• Understand the scope of each assignment before boarding.
• Conduct surveys safely, professionally, and objectively.
• Inspect cargoes, vessel condition, bunkers, and operational matters.
• Communicate professionally with vessel crews, terminals, and clients.
• Prepare accurate, detailed reports with supporting photographs.
• Submit reports within required deadlines.
• Follow all terminal, vessel, and company safety requirements.
• Recommend process improvements when appropriate.

• Draft Surveys
• Bunker Quantity Surveys (ROB/BQS)
• On-Hire & Off-Hire Surveys
• Cargo Damage Surveys
• Cargo Hold Cleanliness & Suitability
• Hull & Machinery Surveys
• Protection & Indemnity (P&I) Surveys
• Engine Performance Assessments
• Pre-Purchase Condition Surveys
• Port Captain Services
• Marine Audits (ISM, ISPS, MLC, Environmental, QHSE)

Preferred Qualifications

• Master Mariner, Chief Mate, or licensed Deck Officer preferred
• Previous marine surveying experience preferred
• Port Captain, Marine Superintendent, or Terminal Operations experience is highly desirable
• Marine engineering experience is also welcomed
• Internal Auditor or Lead Auditor certification is a plus
• Strong written communication and report-writing skills
• Comfortable working independently and making sound professional judgments
• Excellent customer service and communication skills
• Proficient with Microsoft Office and mobile technology

Requirements

• Authorized to work in the United States
• Valid driver's license with reliable transportation
• Current TWIC Card (or ability to obtain one promptly)
• Ability to safely board vessels via gangways, ladders, and launches
• Ability to lift approximately 30 pounds
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
• Willingness to travel throughout the Pacific Northwest as assignments require
• Availability for occasional evenings, weekends, and short-notice assignments
