Marine Surveyor Apprentice - Part Time - San Diego Area

Great River Marine Surveying Company is seeking a Part-Time Marine Surveyor Apprentice to join our growing marine surveying operation.

This position is designed for an experienced marine professional who wants to develop a career in marine surveying. The successful candidate will train directly under an experienced marine surveyor, complete our marine surveyor training program, and receive hands-on field training performing vessel inspections.

This is an excellent opportunity for a USCG-licensed captain, marine technician, mechanic, boatyard professional, or experienced marine industry professional who already has strong practical knowledge of boats and marine systems but wants to develop professional marine surveying skills.

What You'll Do

As a Marine Surveyor Apprentice, you will:

• Complete our structured marine surveyor education and training program.
• Train directly under experienced professional marine surveyors.
• Assist with pre-purchase, insurance, appraisal, and damage surveys.
• Conduct detailed inspections of recreational and commercial vessels.
• Inspect hulls, decks, machinery, electrical systems, fuel systems, plumbing, safety equipment, and other vessel systems.
• Participate in haul-outs and sea trials.
• Photograph and document vessel condition and deficiencies.
• Learn professional marine survey reporting, valuation, standards, and documentation procedures.
• Learn applicable ABYC, NFPA, USCG, and industry standards.
• Develop the skills necessary to eventually conduct marine surveys independently.
• Travel locally to marinas, boatyards, storage facilities, and private vessels as assignments require.

Required Qualifications

• Current or previous U.S. Coast Guard Captain's License preferred; maritime experience required.
• Strong technical and mechanical understanding of boats and marine systems.
• Working knowledge of gasoline and/or diesel engines.
• Familiarity with marine electrical, fuel, plumbing, steering, and mechanical systems.
• Strong attention to detail.
• Comfortable working aboard vessels, in engine compartments, and around boatyards and marinas.
• Ability to communicate professionally with vessel owners, brokers, marinas, and other marine professionals.
• Good written and verbal communication skills.
• Valid driver's license and dependable transportation.
• Ability to work independently once properly trained.
• Willingness to complete required classroom/online training and hands-on apprenticeship.

Training & Career Development

This is more than a part-time job. We are looking for someone interested in becoming a professional marine surveyor.

The selected candidate will complete our marine surveyor training curriculum and then progress through hands-on field training under an experienced surveyor.

Training will include:

• Marine survey methodology
• Hull and structural inspection
• Marine electrical systems
• Engines and machinery
• Fuel and plumbing systems
• Safety and regulatory equipment
• ABYC and industry standards
• Survey photography and documentation
• Vessel valuation
• Professional report preparation
• Pre-purchase and insurance surveys
• Damage surveying
• Client and marina interaction

As experience and competency increase, the apprentice will be given progressively greater responsibility with the goal of eventually performing surveys independently.

Schedule

Part-Time / Flexible

Marine surveying work varies based on customer demand and vessel availability. Candidates should have some flexibility during weekdays and weekends.

This position is ideal for someone who already works within the marine industry or has a flexible schedule and is looking to develop an additional professional career.

Compensation

Compensation: $40-$60 per hour (job dependant)

Compensation and responsibility will increase as training is completed and the apprentice becomes qualified to perform surveys independently.
