Job Description
Overview
The Liftboat Deckhand is an essential member of the vessel crew and is responsible for supporting the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and daily activities of the liftboat. The Deckhand works under the direction of the Captain and/or other designated vessel personnel and assists with deck operations, cargo handling, mooring and line handling, crane operations, jacking operations, vessel maintenance, and general housekeeping.
The Deckhand must maintain a strong commitment of safety, follow company policies and vessel procedures, and comply with applicable U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), OSHA, and other regulatory requirements. This position requires the ability to work effectively as part of a marine crew, communicate clearly, follow instructions, and perform physically demanding work in an offshore environment and varying weather conditions.
Responsibilities
- Assist the Captain and vessel crew with the safe and efficient operation of the liftboat.
- Perform general deck duties, including line handling, securing equipment, rigging, cargo handling, and maintaining a clean and orderly work area.
- Assist with mooring, unmooring, anchoring, and other vessel positioning activities as directed.
- Assist with the deployment, raising, and lowering the vessel legs and related jacking operations in accordance with vessel procedures and instructions from the Captain or designated personnel.
- Assist with crane operations, including rigging, hooking, unhooking, guiding, and securing loads.
- Follow proper rigging and signaling procedures and maintain a safe working area around crane and lifting operations.
- Load, unload, move, secure, and stage cargo, equipment, materials, and supplies on the vessel.
- Perform routine inspections, cleaning, painting, chipping, greasing, and general maintenance of the vessel, deck equipment, and work areas.
- Assist with preventative maintenance and minor repairs as directed by the Captain, Chief Engineer, or other designated personnel.
- Operate hand tools and other equipment necessary to perform assigned maintenance and deck duties.
- Maintain and properly store deck equipment, tools, rigging gear, lines, and other vessel equipment.
- Participate in vessel inspections and report unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, or maintenance concerns to the appropriate supervisor.
- Assist with fueling, bunkering, and other vessel support activities while following all applicable safety procedures.
- Participate in emergency response activities, including fire drills, abandon-ship drills, man overboard drills, and other emergency exercises.
- Maintain familiarity with the vessel's emergency procedures, muster stations, lifesaving equipment, fire-fighting equipment, and emergency communications procedures.
- Follow all company safety policies, vessel procedures, environmental requirements, and applicable USCG and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment throughout the vessel.
- Properly use required personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety equipment.
- Immediately report accidents, injuries, near misses, unsafe conditions, environment incidents, and equipment deficiencies.
- Work cooperatively with vessel crew members, contractors, and other personnel while maintaining professional conduct.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Captain or designated supervisor.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Previous experience in the maritime, offshore, marine construction, or commercial vessel industry is preferred.
- Ability to safely perform line handling, knot tying, rigging, and other general deck operations.
- Working knowledge of basic deck equipment, hand tools, rigging equipment, and vessel maintenance practices.
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to communicate effectively with the Captain and other members of the vessel crew.
- Ability to recognize unsafe conditions and take appropriate action to protect personnel and equipment.
- Knowledge of basic maritime safety practices and emergency procedures.
- Ability to work safely around cranes, heavy equipment, moving machinery, suspended loads, and other hazards commonly found on liftboats.
- Basic knowledge of firefighting, first aid, CPR, and emergency response procedures.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team in a physically demanding offshore environment.
- Ability to work extended periods offshore while maintaining a professional and safety-focused attitude.
- Mechanical aptitude and experience performing routine vessel maintenance or repairs is highly desirable.
- Crane, rigging, welding, mechanical, or other relevant marine/offshore experience is a plus.
Physical Requirements
The Deckhand position is physically demanding and requires the employee to safely perform essential job duties in an offshore marine environment.
The employee must be able to:
- Stand, walk, climb, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and work in confined or elevated areas.
- Climb and descend vessel ladders, stairs, and other access points.
- Frequently use hands and arms to operate tools, equipment, lines, valves, and other deck machinery.
- Lift, carry, push, and pull equipment and materials as required.
- Work outdoors and in varying weather and sea conditions.
- Work around noise, vibration, machinery, water, heights, and other marine-related hazards.
- Maintain balance and mobility while working on a moving vessel.
- Wear required PPE, including hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, flotation devices, and other required safety equipment.
- Perform emergency duties when required.
Work Environment
The Deckhand works primarily aboard offshore liftboats operating in the Gulf of America and may be exposed to changing weather, sea conditions, extreme temperatures, noise, vibration, heavy equipment, machinery, heights, and other hazards associated with offshore marine operations.
The position requires working a rotational offshore schedule and living aboard the vessel for extended periods while on hitch. Employees are expected to maintain a professional, safety-conscious, and cooperative attitude throughout their hitch.
Safety and Compliance
All employees are expected to maintain a safety-first mindset and comply with all applicable company policies, vessel procedures, regulatory requirements, and client requirements. The Deckhand must participate in required safety meetings, drills, training, inspections, and other safety-related activities.
The Deckhand is expected to immediately report unsafe conditions, injuries, incidents, near misses, environmental concerns, and equipment deficiencies to the Captain or appropriate supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Previous maritime, offshore, commercial vessel, or related industrial experience preferred.
- Must be physically capable of performing the essential functions of the position.
- Must be able to pass required pre-employment physical and Post Offer Functional Assessment requirements.
- Must be able to successfully complete required drug and alcohol testing and background/MVR requirements, as applicable to the position.
- Must possess or obtain required maritime training and certifications within the required timeframe.
- Must be willing and able to work an offshore rotational schedule.
- Must be willing to follow all company, vessel, client, and regulatory safety requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous liftboat or offshore vessel experience.
- Previous experience with crane, rigging, or cargo-handling operations.
- Mechanical or commercial vessel maintenance experience.
- Welding or fabrication experience.
- Marine firefighting, first aid, CPR, or other maritime safety certifications.
- Previous experience working with vessel jacking or leg operations.
