Jacobs Entertainment is currently in search of a “Dining Cruise Ship Port Captain” to oversee all onboard operations on a high-profile excursion dinner cruise ship located on Lake Erie. The Lady Caroline offers a unique dining adventure for people of all ages while aboard Cleveland’s most popular dinner cruise ship. All cruises include an unlimited buffet and musical entertainment.

The individuals’ duties include ensuring the safety of passengers and crew during a voyage. You also navigate the vessel, make decisions about ship operations and delegate tasks to other crew members.

Responsibilities also include ensuring that crew members follow both technical procedures and meet the service needs of passengers. Responsibilities also include performing routine maintenance and overseeing all vessel maintenance.

The captain on some occasions interacts with passengers and host special events during each cruise like being an officiant at a wedding ceremony.

The captain makes all executive level decisions about the ship and is in charge of the response in the event of an emergency.

Essential Job Responsibilities and Duties:

• Oversee management of maritime operations of vessel from navigation, crew, maintenance and repair
• Maintain open communication local executive leadership and Human Resources (accordingly) regarding all aspects of the vessel including but not limited to incidents while sailing and while moored, employee issues, guest incidents, safety situations, etc.
• Develop and maintain good standing with US Coast Guard officials, US government agencies, CSO, and DER
• Captain is responsible for all vessel handling and operations
• Captain is responsible for vessel maintenance and repairs
• Conduct pre and post sailing vessel inspections
• Pilot and navigate vessel during assigned watch
• Conducting and scheduling training for emergencies like fire or "man overboard" situations
• Accountable for scheduling, leading, and documentation of safety drills, exercises, and audits with CSO and DER as required
• Accountable for preparing, publishing, and distributing the Crew schedule at least two weeks in advance. Ensure that any adjustments to the schedule are communicated promptly and efficiently to all employees
• Responsible for managing the full employment lifecycle of their employees, including interviewing, hiring, onboarding, coaching, performance management, and, when necessary, conducting terminations in accordance with company policies and procedures
• Line handling using safe and efficient manipulation of mooring lines for departure, docking, and anchoring
• Responsible for ensuring vessel cleanliness & appearance
• Proactive approach to general and preventative vessel maintenance
• Continually maintain safe standards for vessel operation
• Immediately report any/all incidents to General Manager
• Immediately report any/all marine incidents to the National Maritime Center
• Maintain and record all vessel logs as required by US Coast Guard
• Maintain ongoing communication with all shipboard employees while vessel is away from its’ mooring
• Operate marine radio
• Oversee passenger safety and comfort
• Maintain constant communication with weather centers and shipping channels, (i.e. bridge operators, for effective and efficient travel routes for vessels’ cruises.)
• Responsible for the logistics of boarding and disembarking, directing passengers, and managing the flow of people
• Interact with passengers to ensure guest satisfaction and respond to and resolve issues in a timely manner with a positive guest-oriented attitude

Skills, Education and Other Requirements:

• 18 years of age or older (per US Coast Guard)
• Friendly and outgoing personality
• Marine-maritime training required
• Knowledge of all mechanical, electrical, and structural components for real time problem solving,
• Additional credentialing with any maritime training facility a plus
• Verifiable large vessel experience (preferably on a passenger vessel or similar), required
• Significant sea service on Great Lakes waters, required
• Identification that establishes identity
• Identification that establishes the right to work in the United States
