Position Overview

IntelliSys is seeking a motivated Junior Electrical Engineer to support Military Sealift Command (MSC) engineering and design efforts in the Hampton Roads area.

This position is an excellent opportunity for an early-career Electrical Engineer interested in developing experience with marine electrical systems, power generation and distribution, shipboard equipment, and Navy engineering practices.

Working alongside senior engineers and Government technical personnel, you will assist with electrical calculations, system analyses, engineering documentation, shipboard inspections, testing, and troubleshooting. As your experience grows, you will take on increasing responsibility for electrical engineering studies, designs, and shipboard modernization efforts.

The position is primarily remote/hybrid; however, candidates must reside in or near the Hampton Roads region and be available for periodic ship checks, inspections, testing, and other engineering activities at facilities in Little Creek, Norfolk, Newport News, Chesapeake, and surrounding locations.

What You'll Do

As a Junior Electrical Engineer, you will:

  • Support senior engineers in the analysis, design, and evaluation of shipboard electrical power generation and distribution systems.
  • Assist with electrical engineering calculations, including load calculations, voltage drop calculations, fault current analyses, and equipment sizing.
  • Support the development and maintenance of electrical schematics, power and lighting one-line diagrams, and other engineering drawings.
  • Assist with Electrical Plant Load Analyses (EPLA), Electric Plant Distribution Impact Data (EPDID), and protective device coordination studies.
  • Review ship drawings, equipment manuals, specifications, and other technical documentation to understand existing electrical system configurations.
  • Support engineering evaluations of proposed shipboard alterations and equipment installations.
  • Participate in ship checks, engineering surveys, inspections, equipment testing, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Assist with First Article Testing and verification of electrical equipment and system modifications.
  • Collect and analyze shipboard data to support engineering studies and technical recommendations.
  • Help prepare technical reports, engineering calculations, design documentation, and presentations for Government customers.
  • Work alongside mechanical, electrical, and other engineering disciplines to develop integrated solutions to shipboard engineering challenges.
  • Participate in technical meetings, design reviews, and project discussions with Government customers, shipyards, and other engineering organizations.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • One to three years of experience.
  • Strong understanding of fundamental electrical engineering concepts, including AC/DC circuits, electrical power, circuit protection, and power distribution.
  • Ability to interpret or learn to interpret electrical schematics, one-line diagrams, and engineering drawings.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to clearly document engineering calculations, findings, and technical recommendations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability and willingness to learn Navy and marine engineering standards, systems, and processes.
  • Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team.
  • Ability to support periodic shipboard inspections and other local waterfront activities.
  • Secret Security Clearance or ability to meet the clearance requirements associated with the position.

Preferred Qualifications

While previous Navy or maritime experience is valuable, it is not required. Candidates with strong electrical engineering fundamentals and an interest in learning marine engineering are encouraged to apply. Preferred experience or coursework includes:

  • Electrical power systems and power distribution.
  • Power system analysis.
  • Motors, generators, transformers, and protective devices.
  • Controls and instrumentation.
  • Electrical system design.
  • AutoCAD or other CAD software.
  • MATLAB, MathCAD, or similar engineering calculation tools.
  • SKM Power Tools, ETAP, EasyPower, or similar electrical power analysis software.
  • Hands-on electrical laboratory, testing, troubleshooting, internship, co-op, or project experience.

Exposure to Military Sealift Command (MSC), NAVSEA, shipyards, maritime systems, or U.S. Navy surface ships is a plus but is not required.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to perform periodic shipboard inspections aboard vessels in port or dry dock.
  • Ability to safely climb shipboard ladder wells and navigate engineering spaces.
  • Ability to walk extended distances and climb multiple flights of stairs.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with customers and team members both in person and through virtual collaboration tools such as Microsoft Teams.
