Job Description

Role Objectives:

Hiring for Rockport Indiana location and a floater position.

Must be able to work a 7/4/7/3 swing shift schedule and be willing to travel as needed. The vessel deckhand must be familiar with, dedicated to and adhere to safety policies and procedures. This position will perform a variety of operations involving rigging cargo for crane lifts and maintenance tasks to preserve the painted surface of the ship and to maintain line and ship equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Handle lines to moor vessels, tie up to other vessels, or rig towing lines.
  • Lay and affix riggingMaintenance of vessels: cleaning, painting, scraping, assist with engine maintenance/repairs, and fueling.
  • Stand lookout watches while the motor vessel in underway
  • Assist in emergency situations as required by pilot or port captain.
  • Assist in loading/offloading cargo.
  • Deploy/Recover spill boom equipment.
  • Sweep, mop, and wash down decks to remove oil, dirt, and debris.
  • Break out, rig, overhaul, and store cargo-handling gear, stationary rigging, and running gear.
  • Load or unload materials from vessels to include stores, water, fuel and lubricants.
  • Operate, maintain, and repair ship equipment such as winches, cranes, and anchor.
  • Splice and repair wire cables and lines using hand tools
  • Examine cables that hold barges and motor vessels in tow, requires using a ratchet to tighten cables to ensure barges and vessel are snug
  • Check barges and barge void tanks for leakage
  • Learn, follow, and abide by all company safety procedures and policies as stated in company safety management system and any applicable laws, regulations, and all other legal requirements.
  • Responsible for the safety of yourself as well as your fellow crew members and the vessel at all times.
  • Must immediately report to the Captain all safety hazards and dangerous conditions which might be encountered on the motor vessel or the tow.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work effectively as a team member and take and follow instructions
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.

Physical Requirements:

The physical work requirements for this position are classified as very heavy work, during which then employees will exert 100 pounds of force occasionally, or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects when making tow if performing other tasks

Nearly all the physically demanding work of the deckhand is performed outside either on the deck of the motor vessel or on barges in tow, day or night, during all seasons of the year, in all conditions of weather, including weather extremes of heat and cold. From time to time the deckhand will also be required to work in confined spaces such as barge wing tanks.

Knowledge/Skill Requirements:

  • Valid Driver’s License and clean driving record (to be approved by Company Insurance)
  • Reliable Transportation
  • Valid Transportation Worker ID Card (TWIC.) or eligible to obtain
