Position Summary
Cummings Marine Services is seeking motivated individuals to join our team as Entry-Level Deckhands supporting our harbor tug and fleeting operations on McKellar Lake in Memphis, Tennessee.
This position is ideal for someone looking to start a long-term career in the inland marine industry. No prior deckhand experience is required—we are willing to train dependable individuals with a strong work ethic and a commitment to safety.
As a deckhand, you will work alongside experienced crews to safely move, secure, inspect, and maintain barges throughout our fleeting operation while assisting with daily tugboat operations.
Primary Responsibilities
- Assist in making up and breaking apart barge tows.
- Handle lines, rigging, and mooring equipment safely.
- Secure barges using wires, ropes, ratchets, and rigging hardware.
- Perform routine cleaning and housekeeping aboard vessels.
- Assist with vessel maintenance and minor repairs.
- Conduct daily safety inspections of equipment and work areas.
- Operate safely around moving equipment, vessels, and heavy machinery.
- Follow all company safety policies and regulatory requirements.
- Work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Captain or Supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
- Must possess a valid TWIC card or be eligible to obtain one immediately upon hire.
- Must successfully complete pre-employment drug screening and background check.
- Must be physically capable of lifting up to 75 pounds, climbing ladders, stepping between vessels, and working on uneven surfaces.
- Comfortable working around water and in varying weather conditions.
- Strong work ethic, positive attitude, and willingness to learn.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous marine, construction, industrial, farming, military, or heavy equipment experience.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
- Current HAZWOPER (29 CFR 1910.120) certification.
- First Aid/CPR certification.
- Experience operating small boats or working around heavy equipment.
- Mechanical aptitude.
Work Environment
This position is performed primarily outdoors aboard tugboats and barges in an active marine industrial environment. Employees should expect exposure to:
- Heat, cold, rain, and varying weather conditions.
- Noise and vibration.
- Marine equipment and heavy machinery.
- Physical labor, climbing, bending, kneeling, and lifting.
- Work around water and moving vessels.
