Job Overview
Seeking a hardworking, dependable sternman (crew) to join a year-round, inshore/offshore commercial lobster fishing operation based in Northeast Harbor, Maine.
This is a physically demanding position requiring long hours, reliability, and the ability to work safely and efficiently in all weather conditions. The ideal candidate is motivated, works well under pressure, learns quickly, and takes pride in being part of a professional fishing operation.
Responsibilities
- Bait, set, and break traps safely and efficiently.
- Cull, measure, band and handle lobsters in accordance with Maine regulations.
- Assist with all deck operations.
- Maintain lines/gear to operate a safe, organized deck.
- Help maintain a clean, efficient, and safe work environment aboard the vessel.
- Assist with routine maintenance and repairs on fishing gear, general equipment, and the vessel.
- Fuel, wash, and prepare the boat for fishing as needed.
- Work as a team to maximize efficiency while maintaining safe operating practices.
- Follow all safety procedures and assist during emergency situations if necessary.
- Represent the business professionally while working on the waterfront.
Qualifications
- Commercial fishing experience is preferred but not required for the right candidate.
- Mechanically inclined and comfortable using hand and power tools.
- Able to lift 75+ pounds repeatedly throughout the day.
- Comfortable working long hours in hot, cold, wet, and changing weather conditions.
- Reliable transportation and excellent attendance.
- Strong work ethic with the ability to take direction and learn quickly.
- Able to work safely around hyraulic equipment, lines, and moving machinery.
- Able to work safely at all times.
Schedule
- Year-round position.
- Fishing approximately 4 days per week during the main season (May–December) and approximately 2 days per week during the winter.
- Additional days spent repairing and maintaining fishing gear as needed.
- Typical fishing days are 6-12 hours depending on weather, catch, etc.
