Discovering Amistad
Our Organization
Discovering Amistad was formed in 2015 and teaches the lessons of the 1839 Amistad Uprising to advance racial and social justice today. Our schooner, The Amistad, is Connecticut’s flagship and serves as a floating classroom to supplement our proprietary in-class and online curriculum. Discovering Amistad has reached more than 15,000 students in grades 3-12 who have acquired important lessons about justice, freedom, and human rights. Our curriculum begins with the 1839 Amistad Uprising and subsequent Supreme Court decision while highlighting themes of social justice such as dehumanization, resistance, and modern-day comparisons. With the ship as a backdrop, we provide students a multi-tiered educational experience through which history comes alive and students use critical thinking to determine their role in making change in today’s society. The Amistad is a fully functioning sailing vessel that operates throughout Long Island Sound, including the ports of New Haven, Stamford, Bridgeport, New London, Mystic Seaport, and more.
