Duties
- Follows instruction manuals for power tools such as scrapers, sanders, or brushes to prepare surfaces for paint.
- Responds to frequent and complicated changes to instructions given by superiors even when danger is involved to maintain vessel operations.
- Handles mooring lines when docking, fastening lines to mooring post or to towing bitts and over deck and dock bollards.
- Identifies defective equipment in need of repair or replacement.
- Ensures deadlines are met and provide information to superiors on the progress of work and cause of delays.
- Performs general maintenance duties such as minor repair jobs, cleaning, painting and vessel upkeep.
- Assists with repair and overhaul of equipment and machinery, dismantle the main and auxiliary engines, crane engines, pumps, compressors, generators and other machinery as required.
- Oils and greases diesel engines, electric motors, generators, pumps, bearings, gears, shafts, and other machinery and equipment aboard the vessel.

- This position is designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other emergencies (natural or man-made disaster) the incumbent is required to report to or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 45 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 11.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element):
Ability to do the work of a(n) OILER DECKHAND without more than normal supervision which includes; maintaining diesel engines, electric motors, generators, pumps and other shipboard machineries; operating engines and equipment to include pumps, generators, and air compressors; operating other machinery such as crane engines, winches and all deck equipment; assisting with general engine and machinery repairs aboard the vessel; performing general vessel maintenance duties; handling mooring lines when docking, fastening lines to mooring post or to towing bitts and over deck and dock bollards. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
Required Conditions of Employment:
The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess: 1) a valid Merchant Marine Credential for Ordinary Seaman; AND 2) a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).

- Physical Effort: Moderately heavy physical effort is required in lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds; work in stretched and cramped positions.
- Working Conditions: Works both inside and outside during a variety of weather conditions and climates, including extremes of heat and cold and heavy rainfall. There is a danger of slipping from a vessel into water with possibility of physical injury or drowning. On-shore work may involve working in mud, snow, or ice in dirty or cramped situations.
