An established marine operator is seeking an experienced Port Engineer to oversee the maintenance, repair, and operational readiness of its vessel fleet. This role ensures compliance with regulatory standards, manages preventative maintenance programs, and works closely with vessel crews, management, and vendors to support safe and efficient operations.
About the Role
The Port Engineer plays a key role in planning maintenance projects, supervising repairs, and optimizing operational performance while maintaining high safety and environmental standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Fleet Maintenance & Repairs
- Develop and manage preventative maintenance programs
- Conduct vessel inspections to ensure safety, efficiency, and compliance
- Plan and oversee dry-docking and major shipyard projects (budgeting, scheduling, execution)
- Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems
- Coordinate emergency repairs and response efforts
- Collaborate with vessel crews to maintain accurate maintenance records
Regulatory Compliance & Documentation
- Ensure compliance with applicable maritime, safety, and environmental regulations
- Maintain certifications, inspection records, and audit documentation
- Support regulatory inspections and ensure corrective actions are completed
Budgeting & Cost Management
- Develop and manage maintenance and repair budgets
- Oversee procurement, inventory control, and vendor coordination
- Analyze maintenance data to improve efficiency and reduce costs
Crew Training & Support
- Provide technical guidance and training to vessel engineers and crew
- Support hiring, evaluation, and development of engineering personnel
Operational Support
- Provide on-call support for vessel-related issues as needed
- Work closely with operations teams to ensure vessel readiness and performance
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field (preferred)
- Minimum 5 years of experience in vessel maintenance and repair (tugs, OSVs, crew boats, or barges preferred)
- USCG Merchant Mariner Credential (DDE Unlimited or higher preferred)
- Strong knowledge of regulatory requirements, dry docking, and shipyard operations
- Experience with budgeting, procurement, and cost analysis
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and maintenance tracking systems
- Valid TWIC card or ability to obtain
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment
- Physically capable of working in marine environments
Work Environment & Conditions:
- Combination of office, shipyard, and onboard vessel work
- Travel and flexible hours required, including potential emergency call-outs
- Exposure to marine environments, weather conditions, confined spaces, and mechanical systems
