Position: Naval Architect – Marine Systems Experience

This position requires a strong technical background and a willingness to provide hands-on project support. The successful applicant will have experience with structural design of ships and barges as well as stability analysis using GHS software. Experience in designing marine piping and electrical systems is required. AutoCAD and Rhinoceros 3D experience is required.
This is a remote position with periodic travel to job sites located in the contiguous United States. Must be eligible for a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC). Unrestricted travel in the US is necessary. This position requires the ability to climb ladders and maneuver in tight spaces. The responsibilities include working in shipyards and onboard vessels for the purpose of inspection, troubleshooting, and to observe tests and trials.
The successful applicant will perform design engineering activities under the supervision of a senior engineer. A 4-year degree in naval architecture and marine systems engineering is required. A professional engineering license is desired. If not currently licensed, the applicant must be eligible to take the PE exam within the next two years.
RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES :
Assignments may include the following as well as other items not listed:
• Ship checks, equipment inspections, photo documentation of conditions of vessels or equipment.
• CAD drafting in 2D and 3D using AutoCAD, Inventor, and Rhinoceros 3D.
• Deadweight surveys, vessel incline experiments including procedural document preparation and regulatory submittals.
• Vessel and crane stability analyses.
• Structural calculations and analysis; foundation design.
• Deck layouts and arrangements.
• Marine systems design.
• Production design for fixtures, foundations, and other structural design or piping systems including weld callouts.
• Close communication and coordination with Crucible Engineering team and clients.
• Email and phone correspondence with vendors, suppliers, regulatory bodies, and others.
• Project-related travel that may include commercial flights, working in the field, and documenting findings by photograph, written report, and drawings
• Solicit technical information and quotes from vendors or suppliers.
• Call vendors, clients, contractors, and others to check on progress or share information.
• Write and review technical specifications.
• Develop testing criteria for successful system installations.
• Correspond with regulatory bodies such as United States Coast Guard (USCG) and American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).
• Develop templates and project standards.
• Automate redundant tasks and activities such as creating templates and forms.
SKILLS, APTITUDES, QUALIFICATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS:
Mental Aptitudes Required:
• A four-year degree in Naval Architecture with emphasis on marine systems design .
• Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
• Good electronic file organizational skills.

Physical Aptitudes Required:
• Comfortable climbing in, on, and around boats and over gangways.
• Able to travel by plane and drive a rental car.
• Ability to climb ladders, pass through structural access hatches (“manholes”), and maneuver in tight spaces.
• Ability to enter construction areas and machinery spaces while wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE) which may include: respirators or masks, safety goggles, ear plugs, steel toed shoes, protective coveralls, lifejackets, or other items as required by the specific situation.
Skills Required:
• Must be proficient in Microsoft Suite including Word and Excel.
• Must be proficient in AutoCAD software.
• Must be proficient in Rhinoceros 3D software.
• Must be proficient in GHS stability analysis software.
• Experience designing to regulatory rules such as American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) steel vessel design rules and Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Title 46: Shipping.
