Empire Cruises seeks experienced deckhands. Must Practice techniques of good seamanship while performing as an Empire Cruises crew member in fulfilling the job tasks required for a Deck Security & Safety Watch, as well as providing Customer Service.
Qualifications
I. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
- First Aid and CPR certification (not required but preferred)
- TWIC & MMD (not required but preferred)
II. Education and Experience
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Previous experience working on boats. (preferred)
III. Language Skills
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instruction and procedure manuals.
- Ability to understand and communicate basic English phrases in order to assist guests, crew members and ensure safety procedures are communicated.
- Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals.
IV. Mathematical Skills
- Ability to do basic mathematical calculations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and fractions.
V. Thinking Skills
- Ability to reason logically.
- Ability to make independent decisions when needed.
- Ability to follow directions.
- Ability to make quick logical decisions and work under pressure.
VI. Physical Demands
- Ability to move about a boat or other limited space.
- Ability to travel up and down stairs.

Duties and Responsibilities
I. Position Specific Duties
- Preparation of vessels(s) for operational readiness.
- Tends mooring lines during vessel maneuvers and while alongside the dock.
- Stands watch as Deck Safety & Security Officer.
- Performs safety functions assigned on the Watch Quarter and Emergency Station Bill.
- Performs Navigational functions as a look-out, Quartermaster Messenger, Radio Watch, Signalman or Helmsman as assigned by the Captain and/or First Officer.
- Familiar with ground tackle, emergency gear, deck gear, and vessel emergency plans.
- Ensures deck and engine room preventative maintenance.
- Tends gangway(s) during passenger loading and unloading.
- Assists in the queuing and pre-boarding of guests in the entrance lines.
- Lubricates machinery and equipment.
- Splices lines and wire rope.
- Assists with transferring pumping sewage and water.
- Throughout the day, at the beginning and at the ending of shifts; will maintain clean passenger spaces (restrooms, trash, common areas, pilot house, and gangways.)
- Performs other duties as assigned.

III. Documentation
- Advise your supervisor and Corporate Office of any changes in your name, address, work status and other information that affects your compensation, benefits or employment.
- Ensure all purchases of any nature are carefully documented.
- Ensure that all facility, guest or crew incidents that have the potential to create harm, insurance or litigation are promptly reported on the required forms.
- Provide all required documentation.
- Report any guest or crew incident or accident immediately.
IV. Policies
- Follow all policies and standards in the Crew Handbook, Safety Manual and any department standards handbook.
- Use corporate policies and "best practices" to increase efficiency and performance.
- Report any policy or practice that might cause harm to the company, guests, crew or environment.
- Recommend cost improvement strategies.
- Maintain all tools and work equipment to ensure long usage.
V. Communication
- Communicate immediately to the Cruise Manager any serious problem affecting the health/welfare of guest and crew or safety of our assets, facilities, and brand name.
- Smile and greet all guests and potential guests when you come in contact with them.
- Communicate to your supervisor any issues regarding appearance and/or effectiveness of tools or work area.
- Communicate any concerns you may have with your supervisor regarding your job.
