Position Overview
We are seeking a reliable and motivated Marine Mechanic / Boat Systems Technician to join our team. This role focuses on engine maintenance, system diagnostics, and full-vessel troubleshooting.
While the ideal candidate may have broad experience, we are open to individuals with varying skill levels. The priority is a strong foundation in mechanical work and system troubleshooting, with the willingness to learn and grow within the marine industry.
Key ResponsibilitiesEngine Maintenance & Repair
- Perform routine inspections and daily checks:
- Oil, fuel, coolant, and hydraulic fluid levels
- Conduct scheduled maintenance:
- Oil and filter changes (engine, transmission, hydraulic systems)
- Air and fuel filter replacements
- Repair and replace engine components:
- Alternators, starters, belts, and related systems
Diagnostics & Troubleshooting (Core Focus)
- Analyze and interpret troubleshooting charts and service manuals
- Diagnose mechanical and onboard system issues using tools such as:
- Voltmeter
- Pressure gauges
- Dial indicators
- Mechanical stethoscopes
- Identify root causes and perform effective repairs across engine and vessel systems
Marine Systems (Core Focus)
- Service and troubleshoot onboard systems:
- Freshwater, gray water, and blackwater systems
- 12V electrical and battery systems
- Exhaust and auxiliary systems
- Support seasonal operations:
- Commissioning (spring preparation)
- Decommissioning (winterization)
Fuel Systems
- Diagnose and service fuel systems:
- Common rail and rotary injection systems
- Perform timing adjustments:
- Flow timing and pump calibration
- Set timing specifications:
- Locate Top Dead Center (TDC)
- Ensure proper fuel pump timing
Nice to Have: Engine Rebuild & Overhaul
- Disassemble and inspect engines and components
- Measure wear and tolerances:
- Bearings, crankshaft, camshaft, pistons, cylinder walls
- Perform valve and head work:
- Reset valve seats, grind valves, measure tolerances
- Replace worn or damaged components:
- Gaskets, bearings, pistons, sleeves, springs
- Reassemble and test engines:
- Verify performance, ensure no leaks, confirm proper operation
Hydraulic Systems (Limited Scope)
- Basic identification of hydraulic components:
- Pumps, motors, hoses, and fittings
- Perform minor repairs or assist with hydraulic work as needed (Note: Hydraulic work is a smaller portion of this role and not a primary focus.)
QualificationsRequired:
- Solid mechanical background (diesel, automotive, heavy equipment, or marine)
- Experience with engine maintenance and troubleshooting
- Ability to use diagnostic tools and interpret technical information
- Willingness to learn marine systems
- Interest in long-term career growth
Preferred:
- 2–5+ years of relevant experience
- Marine or boatyard experience
- Familiarity with vessel systems (electrical, plumbing, onboard systems)
- Experience with engine rebuilds
- Certifications (e.g., ABYC) or willingness to obtain
