Position Overview
The Port Engineer / Marine Mechanic is a key technical leader responsible for the safe, reliable, and cost‑effective operation of the company’s oceangoing tug fleet. This hybrid role blends hands-on mechanical work with engineering management, project oversight, and regulatory compliance. The position supports vessel crews, manages maintenance programs, capital projects, and performs skilled mechanical troubleshooting of the vessels’ machinery.
The ideal candidate is a self-directed problem solver with deep knowledge of marine propulsion systems, auxiliary machinery, diesel engines, and maritime regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering Management & Planning
- Develop, manage, and execute preventive and corrective maintenance programs across the six‑vessel fleet.
- Coordinate with captains and chief engineers to address technical needs, repair priorities, and parts requirements.
- Schedule and oversee shipyard periods, drydockings, and major overhauls, ensuring projects are completed on time and within budget.
- Maintain technical records, maintenance logs, class documentation, and equipment history.
Hands-On Mechanical Work
- Perform diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repair of propulsion engines, generators, hydraulics, electrical systems, pumps, and other critical systems.
- Conduct onboard inspections of machinery spaces to assess equipment condition, identify deficiencies, and verify workmanship quality.
- Install, adjust, and test mechanical components and systems during routine repairs and project work.
- Respond to urgent mechanical issues, including after-hours situations as needed.
Regulatory Compliance & Safety
- Ensure all vessels comply with USCG, ABS, and company safety/maintenance requirements.
- Prepare engineering documentation for audits, inspections, and class surveys.
- Lead or support root-cause investigations for mechanical failures, safety events, or unplanned downtime.
Procurement & Vendor Management
- Source parts, materials, and services; manage vendor relationships and negotiate pricing.
- Review and approve technical work performed by contractors, shipyards, and service technicians.
- Track budgets, invoices, and project expenditures.
Operational Support
- Collaborate with operations teams to ensure vessel readiness for planned voyages and emergency deployments.
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to onboard engineering crews.
- Assist with developing and implementing engineering policies and best practices.
Qualifications
Required
- 5+ years experience as a marine mechanic, port engineer, marine engineer, or similar role.
- Strong hands-on experience with medium- and high-speed diesel engines (e.g., EMDs, Volvo Penta, John deere, Cummins).
- Understanding of marine electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical systems.
- Working knowledge of USCG Subchapter M, ABS rules, and relevant maritime standards.
- Ability to read technical schematics, service manuals, and engineering drawings.
- Proficiency with computer-based maintenance/asset management systems.
- Ability to climb aboard vessels, work in engine rooms, and perform physical tasks.
Preferred
- Previous experience with oceangoing towing vessels.
- OEM technical certifications (Caterpillar, Cummins, Detroit/MTU, etc.).
- Experience managing drydock or shipyard projects.
- Maritime engineering license or STCW credentials (not required but beneficial).

Pay: $80,000.00 - $100,000.00 per year
