POSITION SUMMARY
The Marine Diesel Mechanic is a senior-level position responsible for the diagnosis, repair, overhaul, and maintenance of marine diesel propulsion systems, generators, and related mechanical systems aboard customer vessels. The candidate must hold current ABYC Marine Engines & Fuel Systems Certification and at least one recognized OEM manufacturer certification. This role demands a high level of technical competency, the ability to work independently, and strong diagnostic reasoning.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS
- REQUIRED: ABYC Marine Engines & Fuel Systems Certification — required (must be current)
- REQUIRED: OEM Manufacturer Certification — at least one required: Volvo Penta, Yanmar, Cummins Marine, or John Deere Marine
- PREFERRED: Multiple OEM brand certifications — strongly preferred
- PREFERRED: ABYC Master Technician designation — a significant advantage
- REQUIRED: 5+ years of marine diesel engine experience — required
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Engine Service & Repair
- Diagnose and repair inboard diesel engines, sterndrives, and marine generators
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance including fluid services, impeller changes, heat exchanger service, and belt/hose replacement
- Perform top-end and major engine overhauls as required
- Fuel system diagnosis and repair including injectors, lift pumps, and fuel polishing
- Cooling system service, thermostat replacement, and raw water system maintenance
Drive Systems & Mechanical
- Transmission service, alignment, and repair
- Shaft seal, cutlass bearing, and stern tube service
- Propeller removal, inspection, and installation
- Exhaust system inspection, repair, and wet exhaust service
Diagnostics & Electronics
- Electronic engine management system diagnostics using OEM diagnostic software
- Interpret fault codes, live data, and sensor readings to identify root causes
- Turbocharger inspection and service
General
- Provide detailed service reports and accurate labor estimates to service manager
- Communicate job status and findings clearly with service team and customers
- Maintain clean, organized work areas and proper tool accountability
