JOB SUMMARY
The Tugboat Captain has ultimate command of a tugboat, responsible for safely maneuvering large vessels, barges, or structures in harbors, rivers, and coastal waters. They guide docking operations, command the crew, ensure regulatory compliance, maintain equipment, and oversee navigation to prevent collisions.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Inspects vessels and peripheral equipment prior to voyage to ensure efficient, safe operation and conformance to regulations and company policies
- Utilizes navigational equipment, weather forecasts and tide/current predictions to ensure the overall safety of vessel and crew
- Operates vessel, when safe to do so, in oceans, bays, lakes, rivers or coastal waters as directed by supervisor
- Directs crew activities while deployed
- Monitor deck operations, including the loading and unloading of equipment, goods, and cargo.
- Complete, manage, and maintain shipboard documents, including vessel logs, voyage plans, daily checklists, JSAs, incident reports
- Ensure that the vessel is fully stocked with all necessary equipment & supplies
- Manage, train, direct, assess, evaluate, and discipline the vessel's crew, including Deckhands, etc.
- Perform basic first aid as needed
- Monitor and ensure the vessel's seaworthiness
- Report incidents, including illnesses, injuries, property damage, and pollution.
- Ensure that sanitary living and working conditions are maintained
- Live and work in close quarters onboard a vessel in harsh weather conditions for weeks at a time
- Adhere to, comply with, and enforce company policies and all applicable laws, rules, and regulations, including United States Coast Guard Regulations, the company's Safety Management System (SMS), and the vessel's Certificate of Inspection (COI).
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma (or Equivalent)
- Basic Computer Skills
- Valid Driver's License
- Valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)
- Valid United States Coast Guard Medical Certificate
- Valid Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) with Master of Towing Upon Great Lakes, Inland Waters and Western Rivers
Pay: $575.00 - $625.00 per day
