General Job Description
Able-Bodied Seamen (AB) help with vessel operations, maintenance, safety and in some cases customer service. Day-to-day duties include operational duties, maintenance duties, ensuring the best safety practices are followed, and outstanding customer service. Most of the active crew on board a ship will be made up of AB, whose responsibility is to perform many of the daily tasks and jobs needed to keep a vessel running and in good order. The AB will work both above and below deck, performing maintenance tasks and handling the ship’s operations.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform maintenance tasks to ensure the vessel operates in efficient and good running order.
- Responsible for all line handling that takes place on board his ship, which includes preparing the ship for docking and departing port, as well as creating tows for tugs, and organizing the rigging needed to haul cargo to and from the ship once at port.
- Preparing the ship for docking and departing port for passengers.
- Checking that the ship is maintaining the correct course by testing the ship’s direction with a compass.
- Perform lookout duties for other ships nearby.
- Communicate ship ranges with naval signals.
- Cleaning and painting the decks.
- Check for the appearance of rust on board the ship and, if found, chip away at it to remove it.
- Cleaning and maintaining both the interior and exterior of vessel to ensure appropriate safety requirements are met.
- Look out for other ships nearby. Away from the wheel, an AB might also be found watching the sea from the bow of the ship, to deliver advance warnings to colleagues if any potential hazards appear.
Education and Training
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Must be a certified AB with Current Credentials of National Endorsement near coastal or higher
Knowledge and Experience
- Ability to maneuver areas within the vessel including engine room spaces and crew areas.
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
