Marine Port Mechanic (Marine Contractor)

Position Overview:
The Marine Port Mechanic – Contractor provides mechanical repair, maintenance, and technical support services for Marine Yards and Customer Jobsites. This role requires working at customer sites to support ongoing operations, planned maintenance, emergencies, outages, and capital improvement projects while meeting all client safety and performance requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform mechanical inspection, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of marine and port equipment, including: o Cranes (material handlers, friction, mobile harbor, floating, and pedestal cranes)
- Tugboats and assist vessels oBarges (deck, crane, and material barges)
- Dredges (cutterhead, hopper, clamshell, and support equipment) oMarine propulsion systems, winches, pumps, gearboxes, and auxiliary systems
- Associated support equipment and systems (etc.)
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all vessels and operations comply with USCG, ABS, and safety (HSE) standards.
- Execute preventive and corrective maintenance in accordance with OEM recommendations, client specifications, and contract scope.
- Diagnose mechanical failures on marine and landbased equipment and perform timely repairs to minimize operational downtime.
- Read and interpret OEM manuals, mechanical drawings, schematics, and service documentation.
- Support vessel and equipment overhauls, retrofits, inspections, and commissioning activities.
- Coordinate work with client representatives, vessel crews, electricians, welders, and other trades.
- Comply with all contractors, clients, port authority, Coast Guard, and OSHA safety requirements.
- Complete service reports, time sheets, and maintenance documentation accurately.
- Maintain contractors provided tools, equipment, and work areas in safe working conditions.
- Respond to emergency service calls, breakdowns, and afterhours work as required.
Required Qualifications & Skills:
- High school diploma or GED required; technical or trade school training preferred.
- 3+ years of experience working with marine, maritime, heavy industrial, or port equipment.
- Certifications: Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) is typically required, DBIDS, CIA, Newport News Shipyard Badge, & Rapid Gate.
- Technical Proficiency: Knowledge of marine systems (propulsion, electrical, hydraulic, etc.) and maintenance management software (e.g., ABS NS5).
- Strong working knowledge of: o Diesel engines and marine propulsion systems
- Hydraulic and pneumatic systems oMechanical drive systems (bearings, couplings, shafts, gearboxes)
- Proven ability to troubleshoot and repair mechanical systems in active marine environments.
- Ability to meet client background, drug screening, and site access requirements.
- Valid driver’s license; ability to travel to job sites and vessels.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and project management skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience as a marine contractor supporting ports, dredging operations, or vessel maintenance.
- Prior experience working as a contractor in marine terminals, ports, or shipyards.
- Welding and fabrication skills (MIG, TIG, stick).
- Familiarity with Coast Guard regulations and marine safety practices.
- OSHA 10/30, TWIC card, or port credentials (or ability to obtain).
- OEM or manufacturer training on marine engines, cranes, or dredging equipment.
Working Conditions
- Client controlled marine and industrial worksites.
- Exposure to heavy machinery, noise, fuels, lubricants, and moving equipment.
- Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Extended work hours, nights, weekends, and travel as required by project demands.
- Often requires travel (25%+) to vessels or shipyards, with significant time spent in shipyard environments.
- Must be able to work in physically demanding environments.
- Must maintain professional conduct and represent the contracting company positively at all client locations.
Physical & Work Requirements
- Ability to lift and handle materials up to 5075 lbs.
- Capable of working aboard vessels, on barges, at heights, and in confined spaces.
- Work performed outdoors and on the water in varying weather conditions.
- Extended hours, nights, weekends, travel, and emergency callouts as required by contract.

Compensation
- Pay Range $75,000 $125,000 (Depending on work experience)
