Bluewater Maritime School is seeking a highly experienced steam engineering professional to serve as a Contract QMED – Steam Propulsion Instructor. This role is structured as an independent contractor engagement and offered on a part-time, quarterly basis, making it well suited for seasoned mariners or steam plant professionals who wish to remain professionally active in maritime training while maintaining schedule flexibility.
The Contract QMED Instructor is responsible for delivering in-person classroom instruction for Qualified Member of the Engine Department (QMED) – Steam Propulsion courses. Instruction is conducted in strict accordance with approved curriculum, U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) regulatory requirements, and Bluewater Maritime School instructional standards.
The instructor provides comprehensive training on the fundamentals, operation, safety, and maintenance of steam propulsion plants and associated shipboard systems, with a strong emphasis on regulatory compliance, safe operating practices, and practical application of theory. Instructional delivery must be clear, accurate, and consistent with USCG expectations for professional maritime education and credentialing.
Responsibilities
- Deliver in-person classroom instruction in accordance with the approved QMED – Steam Propulsion curriculum, Bluewater Maritime School standards, and applicable U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) requirements.
- Instruct students in steam theory and thermodynamic principles relevant to maritime steam propulsion systems.
- Teach the construction, operation, monitoring, and safety features of boilers, including associated safety devices and controls.
- Explain the function and operation of feedwater systems, condensate systems, and steam distribution systems as applied to shipboard steam plants.
- Provide instruction on steam turbine fundamentals, reduction gears, and the operation of auxiliary machinery supporting steam propulsion plants.
- Cover routine maintenance practices, troubleshooting techniques, and common faults associated with steam propulsion and auxiliary systems.
- Emphasize hazard recognition, safe operating limits, and emergency response procedures consistent with maritime best practices and regulatory guidance.
- Administer quizzes, examinations, and knowledge assessments in alignment with approved instructional materials and course objectives.
- Maintain compliance with Bluewater Maritime School policies, instructional standards, and USCG approval requirements throughout course delivery.
- Foster a safe, professional, and effective adult learning environment conducive to knowledge retention and practical understanding.
- Support and prepare students for successful completion of the QMED – Steam Propulsion examination, including review of applicable subject matter and testing expectations.
Experience
- Demonstrated professional experience with steam propulsion systems, steam plants, or high‑pressure steam generation equipment.
- Maritime steam plant experience is strongly preferred, including service aboard vessels utilizing steam propulsion or auxiliary steam systems.
- Experience in industrial, utility, or shore‑based steam generation facilities (such as power plants, refineries, or similar high‑pressure steam environments) is acceptable, provided the individual can effectively apply knowledge to maritime steam systems and QMED instructional requirements.
- Thorough understanding of steam theory, thermodynamics, system operation, maintenance practices, and safety procedures relevant to steam propulsion and auxiliary systems.
- Ability to translate practical, real‑world experience into clear, compliant classroom instruction aligned with approved curriculum and U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) standards.
- Prior instructional, mentoring, or training experience with adult learners is preferred but not required.
Note: A USCG Merchant Mariner Credential is not required, provided the candidate demonstrates sufficient steam plant expertise.
Compensation
- Competitive contractor compensation offered $280-320 per day based on experience.
