R&D Pilot Coater Chem Mix & Coating Technician

ZINK has an immediate opening for a high-energy, detail-oriented, and dependable R&D Pilot Coater Chem Mix & Coating Technician. In this role, you will support a team of scientists by conducting experiments, improving the quality of proprietary products, and participating in pilot-scale coating and chemical-mixing operations. You will join a collaborative, hands-on team located in our Billerica, MA facility.
Major Responsibilities
Coating
- Operate pilot coating equipment, including paper unwinding/winding systems, hot-air dryers, multi-layer coating heads, and precision fluid-dispensing tools.
- Maintain pilot coating systems through disassembly, cleaning, and reassembly of pumps, blowers, and other precision components.
- Troubleshoot process, raw-material, and basic equipment issues.
- Sample and inspect film before and after coating.
- Perform quality checks including printing, visual inspection, and color evaluation.
Dispersions / Chemical Mixing
- Follow computer-based batch recipes to prepare chemical mixtures; weigh and measure chemicals with proper sequence, addition rate, and safety standards.
- Operate chemical-mixing equipment including reactors, mixing vessels, mills, sonolators, and chillers.
- Sample, measure, and record physical and chemical properties of solutions.
- Clean kettles and maintain process cleanliness.
- Troubleshoot raw-material, process, and basic equipment problems.
General Duties
- Maintain housekeeping and ensure cleanliness of work areas.
- Work collaboratively to meet safety, quality, and production goals.
- Use company computer systems for payroll, email, and documentation (Word, Excel).
- Receive and transport materials manually or using pallet jacks and forklifts.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Working Conditions
Work will be performed in a fluids lab and pilot-coating plant, collaborating closely with engineers and scientists on the development and scale-up of chemical mixtures and coatings.
Knowledge, Skills & Requirements
- General understanding of chemical handling, process control, SPC, safety procedures, dissolving/diluting chemicals, and property testing (preferred).
- Previous experience in a team-oriented work environment.
- Ability to learn process-control, quality, and inventory systems.
- Strong attendance record and reliability.
- Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated initiative, willingness to learn, and strong work ethic.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 60 lbs, depending on assigned area.
- Ability to stand for extended periods during the work shift.
Education
- High school diploma or GED required
- Associate degree preferred
