PORT CAPTAIN JOB DESCRIPTION
The Port Captain helps oversee the day-to-day operations and maintenance of two vessels in two locations for Rochester By Water. The Port Captain reports to the Director of Operations. This position is seasonal and part time (20-25hrs/wk) from April until mid-November and requires work on Saturdays and Sundays.
RESPONSIBILITIES
● Vessel Maintenance
o Coordinate pre-season boat preparation and post-season boat maintenance
o Schedule vessel maintenance
o Coordinate regular inspections of all vessels, equipment, and instruments for proper operation
o Oversee and complete basic vessel repairs, pumpouts, and water fills throughout the season
o Schedule, oversee, and assist with vessel fueling
● Compliance
o Ensure boats and crew are in compliance with Coast Guard regulations
o Arrange captain and crew trainings; complete and maintain crew training records
o Ensure accurate completion of captain logs
o Maintain vessel permits and licenses
o Coordinate and maintain log of captain and crew drug testing
● Human Resources
o Coordinate staffing and necessary equipment for boat transfers
o Substitute for crew or ticket booth staff as needed
o Communicate regularly with Director of Operations re: vessel condition, safety concerns, and performance of captain and crew
● Operations Support
o Purchase and deliver ice, beverages, and snacks to vessels
o Run errands as needed o Maintain storage areas at the Waterfront Center and ticket booth
o Other duties as assigned
REQUIREMENTS
● Ability to communicate in a timely and effective manner
● Compliance with Coast Guard drug testing regulations
● Ability to lift up to 50lbs
● Demonstrated organizational skills, flexibility, ability to multitask, and attention to detail
● Basic mechanical and diesel engine knowledge
● Knowledge of maritime terminology
● Abililty to perform minor repairs
● Ability to troubleshoot and resolve problems quickly
● Availability for problem/emergency situations
● Ability to learn and use a variety of computer applications, e.g. Google Drive, Sling, FareHarbor
● Ability to work in a team and treat colleagues with dignity and respect
● Own and operate a personal vehicle for organization business

Rochester By Water is the not-for-profit organization that owns and operates Sam Patch and Riverie. Our mission is to engage people of all ages and backgrounds in experiential learning on the Erie Canal and Genesee River, fostering appreciation, stewardship, and preservation of these waterways for generations to come.
COMPENSATION
Compensation is $25-30/hour commensurate with qualifications and experience. Mileage reimbursement. Ability to participate in retirement savings plan. See Staff Handbook for additional benefits. Employees are paid biweekly.
