Port Captain
Port Captain – El Segundo, CA Senior marine operations leader responsible for operational oversight of a tug and barge fleet, with direct accountability for personnel, safety, regulatory compliance, and asset performance. This role blends hands-on vessel operations expertise with shoreside leadership—driving crew management, scheduling, maintenance execution, and incident response—while ensuring alignment with USCG and broader regulatory frameworks. Acts as the central interface across customers, regulators, and internal stakeholders to deliver safe, efficient, and compliant marine operations. Key Responsibilities & Scope: • Lead day-to-day operations of tug and barge fleet, including scheduling, utilization, and coordination across regions • Directly manage marine personnel (Deck Officers, Deckhands), including hiring, training, performance management, and crew deployment • Ensure full compliance with USCG, ABS, OSHA, EPA, ISM, and company SMS standards; lead audits, inspections, and incident investigations • Own operational budgets, cost controls, and forecasting for vessel operations, maintenance, and crew expenses • Oversee maintenance, repair programs, and vessel modifications, including shipyard and third-party work execution • Serve as primary liaison with customers, pilots, regulators, and vendors; support commercial execution and service delivery • Provide leadership in safety culture, emergency response, and labor relations, including union engagement and contract support Required Experience & Credentials: • 5+ years of sailing as a Tug Captain or equivalent shoreside marine operations leadership experience • Valid USCG Master’s or Mate’s License (required) • Bachelor’s degree (maritime academy strongly preferred) or equivalent combination of experience • Deep operational experience in offshore towing and/or harbor ship assist operations • Hands-on experience with twin screw and tractor tugs • Strong working knowledge of U.S. maritime regulatory frameworks (USCG, ABS, OSHA, EPA, ISM) • Proven leadership in crew management, labor relations, and safety/incident response
