RiverLift is seeking an industry-experienced yard laborer/deckhand for our barge & rail terminal located in West Elizabeth, PA. No overnight towboat work required, responsibilities include providing labor to help load/unload, secure, and move barges at our river terminal facility located in West Elizabeth, PA.
Summary of Position :
The primary purposes of this position are to perform labor in the yard and dock areas to ensure safe and efficient loading of barges/trucks and rail cars and to perform yard and dock work. Provides physical labor associated with terminal activities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include:
- Serving as a deckhand to move barges within river dock area including, but not limited to: making tow; transfer of rigging; lay rigging; handle lines; shifting barges; drop or pickup barges; checking tow; move and operate portable pumps; Deckhands must catch a line on deck fittings; work lines at the dock and fleeting area; cast lines free when getting underway; and assist in the navigation of the boat.
- Prepare barges for loading and unloading including, but not limited to: directing equipment operators to lift and place barge lids with skyhooks; clean barges and dock area using skid steer loaders and hand tools.
- Ensure safe and efficient loading of barges, including, but not limited to: operating barge winch and loading conveyors, setting and monitoring barge lines, and adjusting lines as necessary during loading and unloading operations. Review load details and determine proper placement of loads ensure that the barge remains level; direct cranes to set steel coils or other materials in the barge.
- Operate yard equipment to assist with daily work.
Perform additional duties as needed, including but not limited to:
- Provide physical labor for facility housekeeping requirements.
- Fuel vehicles and equipment.
- Using hand tools such as shovels and brooms to clean up spilled or tracked materials.
- Perform maintenance and housekeeping tasks.
- Operating skid steer loader equipped with bucket and sweeper attachments.
- Operating off-road rock trucks to load and unload bulk materials.
- Must observe safety policies and procedures.
Work Days & Shifts
- Position typically works Monday through Friday, beginning at 6:00 a.m.
- Frequent overtime is likely between Monday and Friday. Saturday hours will be required on occasion.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- 3-5 years of experience in industry-related work.
- Valid driver's license. (CDL not required).
- Must have a clean, safe driving record.
- The applicant must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screening test.
- Must be willing to work flexible hours, including overtime.
Preferred Skills:
- Forklift or Skid Steer operating experience is a plus.
- River Industry experience a plus.
- Mechanical experience a plus.
Compensation:
- Pay is based on experience.

Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $19.00 - $25.00 per hour
Expected hours: 40 – 50 per week
