The Port Captain is responsible for the overall maritime integrity, safety, compliance, and professional development of the fleet and captains. This role is strategic and oversight-focused, ensuring vessels, captains, and programs meet or exceed USCG, company, and safety standards.
Core Responsibilities
Fleet Operations Oversight
- Provide up-to-date marine weather information and forecasts to the GM and participate in high-level operational decision-making.
- Ensure adherence to approved program outlines by all captains and crew.
- Provide shoreside operational support for vessels and marine assets as needed.
- Set captain schedules
- Coordinate vessel assignments
- Administer and oversee the company’s USCG-compliant drug testing program.
- Conduct regular onboard operational and safety audits.
USCG Compliance & Regulatory Leadership
- Serve as the primary point of contact with the USCG.
- Maintain current knowledge of CFR requirements related to T-boats and small passenger vessels and be responsible for preparing vessels for annual and COI inspections.
- Communicate regulatory updates and compliance requirements to captains and crew and regularly audit compliance.
- Collaborate with GM, Maintenance Manager, and captains to ensure all vessels meet or exceed safety standards.
Captain Hiring, Training & Mentorship
- Participate in the hiring and vetting of fleet captains.
- Develop and deliver comprehensive captain training programs.
- Mentor captains and support professional development.
- Fulfill the role of Captain, as required.
Safety Culture & Training
- Develop and maintain captain and crew training models covering seamanship, emergency response, safety protocols, and program execution.
- Audit drills and emergency training for compliance.
- Implement and manage a near-miss / good-catch safety program.
- Promote a proactive, transparent safety culture fleetwide.
Maintenance Oversight (Strategic)
- Assist the Maintenance Manager with development and administration of preventative maintenance programs.
- Review maintenance audits, inspections, and digital maintenance records for accuracy and effectiveness in executing maintenance needs.
- Provide oversight of and assist with the maintaining of vessel condition and readiness.
Qualifications
- USCG Master Captain’s License (100-ton or greater) with sailing endorsement
- Extensive maritime operations experience
- Strong USCG regulatory knowledge
- Proven leadership and mentoring ability
- High attention to safety, compliance, and detail
- Strong decision-making and communication skills
Pay: $80,000.00 per year
