Overview:
As a Deckhand or Deck Engineer at Coast Line Transfers, LLC, you will play a critical role in maintaining our vessels in a state of readiness for customer operations. Your work will include a range of physical tasks, from handling heavy lines and wires to general vessel maintenance and assisting with engineering tasks. This position offers the opportunity to work on various vessel types and contribute significantly to our maritime operations.
Essential Job Functions:
- Maintain the deck's cleanliness, ensuring it is free of lines and obstructions.
- Execute tasks as directed by the Captain or Mate, contributing to the vessel's efficient operation.
- Acquire skills in using the radio, knot tying, line/wire splicing, and making up and handling heaving lines and messengers.
- Perform lubrication services and ensure proper vessel tie-off as instructed.
- Provide accurate direction, distance signals, and information over the radio.
- Assist in steering the vessel and fueling operations.
- Continuously maintain the vessel's appearance through painting and cleaning.
- Handle daily sanitation tasks, including cleaning heads, galleys, and removing garbage.
- Load supplies and assist in general cleanup and maintenance of the vessel.
- Support general cooking and galley duties as required.
- Assist the engineer with designated engine room duties, including startups/shutdowns, fuel transfers, and bilge cleaning.
Qualifications:
- Capacity to comprehend and execute specific orders from the Captain or Mate.
- Ability to learn and apply safety awareness, injury prevention, and firefighting techniques.
- Minimal direction needed to carry out essential job responsibilities and duties.
- Understand and use information from cargo information cards and material safety data sheets.
- Fluency in reading, speaking, and understanding English for effective communication.
- Previous work experience is helpful but not necessary.
Required Certifications or Licenses:
- Ability or possession of a Coast Guard Merchant Mariners Document.
- Ability or possession of a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
- Valid state driver's license.
Job Condition and Environment:
- Exposure to all weather conditions (rain, ice, snow, heat, wind, heavy seas, etc.)
- Ability to live in tight spaces and maintain good relations with crew members for extended periods.
- Comfort with heights is essential.
- Work involves using pike poles, heavy lines, winches, mechanical tools, paints, cleaning solvents, and kitchen utensils/cookware.
- Physical fitness to handle heavy lines/hoses, lift, carry heavy items, and navigate barges and ladders effectively.
Expected Hours of Work:
- Flexibility in schedules and hours, including weekends, holidays, and night shifts.
- Availability for call-outs as needed.
