Bruce S. Rosenblatt & Associates, LLC is seeking an experienced Senior Naval Architect/Marine Engineer to join its growing engineering team in the Newport News, VA office. BSR seeks an engineering professional with strong technical skills and the ability to perform comprehensive engineering calculations while supporting and supervising younger engineers.
What You Will Do/Responsibilities
Complete engineering tasks assigned by project managers and other leadership personnel accurately and efficiently. Tasks span the full range of design stages including feasibility studies, concept design, functional design, and detail design. Disciplines could include:
Hydrostatics & stability (weight estimates, intact/ damage stability assessments, etc.)
Arrangements (general arrangements, compartment outfitting, aviation integration, topside integration)
Overall ship design integration
Requirements development
Fluid systems engineering
Lifting, rigging, and transportation engineering
Engineering and design of ship structures ranging from local equipment foundations to development of global vessel scantling plans.
Docking calculations and development of docking plans
Mentor staff in devising approaches to solving problems and challenges. To include development of accurate and detailed engineering calculations using first principles hand calculations or other methods as appropriate, including Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
Evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria for design and modification of ships and other vessels – both commercial and government.
Design repairs and upgrades to existing equipment and systems, taking into account constructability and capabilities of individual clients.
Perform deadweight surveys and inclining experiments during vessel construction and/or repair availabilities. Lead effort to incline vessels as required by regulatory bodies. Create plans for weights required, angle of heel measurements, freeboard measurements, etc. Use GHS program or vessel hydrostatic data to establish vessel CG, GM, and displacement.
Create drawings in AutoCAD such as general arrangements, lines plan, structures, hull scantling plans, tonnage, machinery arrangements, egress, structural fire protection, side profiles, inclining weight layouts, docking plans, and fluid system diagrams.
Provide support for various assessments, inspections, and technical assistance as tasked, to include vessel visits and preparation of sketches onsite.
Review drawings for completeness and conformance to industry and company standards.
Prepare and present technical reports and engineering documentation to peers, supervisors, clients, and regulatory bodies.
Interface with existing and potential clients regularly to convey technical information clearly and accurately.
Required Qualifications and Experience
· U.S. Citizenship and ability to acquire Secret Security Clearance. Active Secret clearance preferred.
· At least 5-7 years of related experience; 10 or more years of experience preferred. Compensation to suit experience.
· BS or Advanced Degree in Naval Architecture and/or Marine Engineering
· Working knowledge of naval architecture, marine engineering, and ship structure design.
· Strong analytical experience and technical problem-solving skills.
· Able to develop projects from concept to completion.
· Knowledge and experience with developing calculations and drawings for Class and Flag State review and approval.
· Able to think creatively to solve complex problems.
· Have excellent written and spoken communication skills. Must be able to communicate technical issues/solutions clearly and effectively.
· Proficiency in Naval Architecture and other software tools such as: RHINO, GHS, AutoCAD, PipeFLO, and MS-Office.
· Experience using FEMAP/NASTRAN Finite Element Analysis software.
· Experience with relevant Class Rules and US and International regulations and codes.
· Strong attention to quality, organization skills, computing, and presentation skills.
· Must work well in a team dynamic but also be able to work independently.
· Able to estimate work scope, make budgets and schedules, and manage workload and technical scope.
· Able and willing to travel internationally from time to time.
· Able and willing to occasionally perform inspections and supervise work onboard ships and in shipyards. This may involve strenuous activity, proper use of PPE, and exposure to industrial workplace hazards.
Favorable Qualifications and Experience
· Professional Engineering License for Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering or related disciplines strongly desired.
· Shipyard experience
· Project Management experience
· Seagoing Engine Room Experience
· Experience with welding engineering, weld selection, and weld analysis
· Familiarity with ShipConstructor, Cadmaticand other 3D design tools (such as Navisworks, SolidWorks)
· Familiarity with Microsoft Project
· HVAC engineering experience
· Electrical engineering experience
Pay: $90,000.00 - $150,000.00 per year
