Job Summary
Freeport Launch is hiring a part-time Yard Technician/Deckhand in Freeport, TX. This position is responsible for the upkeep, organization and operations of the company's yard, vessels, and equipment. This role involves both land-based duties, such as organizing the yard, assisting with boat preparations, and deckhand duties, such as handling lines and assisting with marine operations. The successful candidate must have a strong work ethic and be able to work both independently and as part of a team.
Duties and responsibilities
Yard operations
- Maintain a safe and organized yard: Keep the yard clean, free of debris, and well-organized to ensure a safe working environment.
- Manage equipment: Move and stage materials, tools, and vessels using appropriate equipment like forklifts and trailers.
- Assist with boat preparation: Help with the hauling, blocking, power washing, and launching of vessels.
- Perform general maintenance: Complete tasks such as painting, pressure washing, and repairing facilities or equipment as needed.
- Control inventory: Monitor and assist with managing the inventory of yard materials and supplies.
Marine and deck operations
- Handle lines and rigging: Assist with mooring, docking, and undocking vessels.
- Clean and maintain vessels: Keep the deck and interior spaces of boats clean and well-maintained.
- Secure cargo: Safely load, unload, and secure cargo and supplies on vessels.
- Conduct safety checks: Participate in safety drills and ensure that all on-board safety equipment is properly maintained.
- Serve as a lookout: Act as a lookout during vessel movements and in inclement weather.
Qualifications
- A high school diploma or equivalent required.
- Experience in a marine or yard environment is preferred but not required.
- Must pass a pre-employment physical, drug test, and background check in compliance with maritime regulations.
- Must be able to obtain necessary security credentials, such as a TWIC card, as well as USCG Merchant Mariner Credentials (Ordinary Seaman/Wiper/Steward-Food Handler).
Requirements
- Physical stamina: Must be physically fit and able to stand for extended periods, lift heavy objects (50–75+ pounds), and perform strenuous manual labor in various weather conditions.
- Mechanical aptitude: Basic experience with tools, equipment maintenance, and small engine repair is a plus.
- Communication skills: Must be able to follow instructions, work collaboratively with a team, and communicate effectively with supervisors and crew.
- Safety conscious: Strong understanding and adherence to safety protocols and regulations.
- Flexible schedule: Ability to work a variable part-time schedule, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays, depending on the needs of the launch service.
