Overview:
Port Engineer (AUTEC-2026-25289):
Bowhead seeks a full time Port Engineer to oversee the management of all phases of shipyard work periods in support of the Atlantic Undersea Test & Evaluation Center (AUTEC) at Andros Island, Bahamas. The port Engineer will maintain and document the execution of program requirements for each respective vessel.
Responsibilities:
Job duties include but are not limited to:
- Maintain up-to-date documentation binders for each respective vessel on a monthly basis.
- Collect and maintain documentation for each respective vessel for the monthly lube oil consumption and run-time hours for all engines on each vessel.
- Help identify cause of failure, identify and order parts, work with vendor subject matter experts when needed, and provide hands on assistance to affect repairs when needed.
- Maintain reference and historical repair/parts ordering binders for each respective vessel.
- Work with the Senior Marine Engineer to identify, order and install new equipment systems on AUTEC vessels such as generator replacements, windlass replacements, hydraulic systems and components, MSD systems and components, Compressed Air Systems and components, etc. along with any other customer generated vessel upgrades.
- Order components as needed or consumed.
- Review status and need for on-hand critical spare inventories for all vessels.
- Spares to include critical engine parts, consumables such as filters, hoses, fittings, etc., as well as major components such as inhaul winches, hydraulic cylinders, engine controls, etc.
- Become familiar with all AUTEC vessels and master the working knowledge of the operation of all vessel systems as needed per Engineer check-out requirements.
- Be available to ride as Chief Engineer on all vessels.
- Manage the issuance of POs (purchase orders) to outside vendors to perform the annual certification testing and documentation for vessel safety systems on all AUTEC vessels. Specifically, manage the annual certifications for Lifeboats and Fire Suppression system Testing and certifications for each AUTEC vessel.
- Maintain a schedule status board of all Chief engineer vessels and assistants' assignments to manage and oversee time-off requests for vacations, sick time, training attendance, contact numbers, etc.
- Be available to work with the Harbor Master to identify and communicate vessel manning requirements based on testing requirements and on-the-fly adjustments in real time to address manning deficiencies/assignments as needed.
- Responsible for oversight of HSMSTs, (High Speed Maneuverable Surface Target) Snapper 7, Red Snapper, Dive Boat, Alamar 1, Alamar 2, and Boomerang. This fleet contains 15 outboard engines with associated systems and equipment.
- The Port Engineer/Small Vessel Lead will work with the marine outboard mechanic to keep these growing fleet in a state of mission readiness.
The Port Engineer reports to the Operations Manager, Marine Engineering or his representative. This is a part time, on call, positiion and the port Engineer should expect callouts, to the island about 3-6 times per year for Shipyard Periods, urgent repairs, oversee modifications, and other Shipyard logistical tasking as needed.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent required
- Marine engineering license; 4000hp preferred.
- Minimum 3 years in marine engineering role.
- Working knowledge of marine vessel systems.
- Intermediate to advanced level skills in Microsoft Office software suite - Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.
- Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and outside contacts.
- Strong interpersonal skills and good judgment with the ability to work alone or as part of a team.
Physical Demands:
- Must be able to lift and /or move up to 50 pounds
- Must be able to stand and walk for prolonged amounts of time
- Must be able to twist, bend and squat periodically
SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIRED: Must be able to obtain a security clearance at the Secret level. US Citizenship is a requirement for Secret clearance at this location.
